Unveiled: The 360-Year-Old Mystery of Vermeer's 'Girl With The Pearl Earring' Muse (2025)

For over three centuries, the world has been captivated by the enigmatic 'Girl With a Pearl Earring.' But who was she, really? The mystery surrounding Johannes Vermeer's muse has finally, allegedly, been solved, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artist's life and work.

Art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon has proposed a compelling theory, detailed in a recent Times of London article and his new book, "Vermeer: A Life Lost and Found." Vermeer, who painted the iconic masterpiece in 1665, primarily worked for a Dutch couple, Pieter Claeszoon van Ruijven and Maria de Knuijt, who were part of a radical Christian sect called the Remonstrants.

So, who does Graham-Dixon believe the girl is? He suggests it's most likely Magdalena, the patron's 10-year-old daughter. The girl's attire, including her exotic turban and the famous pearl earring, is interpreted as a representation of Mary Magdalene, a figure revered by the Remonstrants. They modeled their lives on Mary Magdalene and other followers of Jesus.

"She (Magdalena) would have been 12 in the autumn of 1667, and assuming that she was a Collegiant, a more radical outgrowth like her parents, she would have solemnized her commitment to Christ at that age," Graham-Dixon claimed. He further suggests that Vermeer's paintings were deeply influenced by the religious beliefs of Maria de Knuijt and those around her, including Vermeer himself.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Not everyone agrees with this interpretation. Ruth Millington, author of "Muse: Uncovering the Hidden Figures Behind Art History’s Masterpieces," believes the painting isn't necessarily a straightforward portrait. She argues that the allure lies in the mystery itself, suggesting it's a 'tronie,' an imaginary figure.

As the BBC reported, Vermeer was known for withholding meaning, leaving viewers to ponder the depths of his art. Even Tracy Chevalier, author of the novel "Girl With a Pearl Earring," agrees, stating that the painting's power lies in its unresolved nature.

What do you think? Do you believe the identity of the girl has been revealed, or is the mystery the true beauty of the painting? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
