In an exciting announcement today, Moomin Characters, alongside Annapurna, declared that Rebecca Sugar, renowned for her work on the beloved series "Steven Universe," will take the helm as both director and writer for this animated feature. Notably, this marks the first time a Moomin film is being produced in the United States.
Joining her in this endeavor is Julia Pistor, a producer with an impressive portfolio of animated classics, including the "SpongeBob SquarePants" movies and the "Rugrats" films. Her experience promises to add depth to this new portrayal of the Moomin family.
Originally brought to life during World War II by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson, the Moomins are lovable, roundish trolls residing in the enchanting Moominvalley—a whimsical realm brimming with adventure and underscored by values such as friendship, courage, and respect for one another.
The Moomin tales, which will serve as the foundation for this upcoming film, have seen astonishing popularity, being translated into over 60 languages and adapted into TV shows that reached audiences in 120 different countries. Additionally, Jansson's comic strip featuring these characters enjoyed syndication in 40 nations, showcasing their worldwide appeal.
