A true testament to resilience and determination, Laila Phelia's story is one that inspires and captivates. Imagine waking up one day, only to find a curtain of darkness descending upon your vision. This is precisely what happened to Laila, a star guard in the making, during the summer of 2024.
Laila's journey began with a simple belief in a contact lens issue, but it soon escalated into a battle for her vision. After transferring from Michigan, where she shone as an All-Big Ten player, to Texas, fate had other plans. An emergency surgery to repair a detached retina became the turning point of her athletic career.
But here's where it gets controversial: should athletes be defined solely by their physical abilities, or is there more to the story? Laila's experience challenges this notion. Despite the loss of vision in one eye, she persevered. The months that followed were a blur of laser treatments, conversations about eye implants, and the constant mental battle that accompanied her physical recovery.
"It was pretty hard," Laila admits. "I wanted to play my senior year, but it was a tough road."
Fast forward to the present, and Laila is a picture of resilience. Her eye issues are a thing of the past, thanks to an additional surgery in April 2025. She's gained a medical hardship season, and now, she's ready to take on her final college basketball year at SU.
"Playing with goggles is a small price to pay," she says with a smile.
Felisha Legette-Jack, SU's coach, couldn't agree more. She had the privilege of evaluating Laila for the USA Basketball AmeriCup team in 2023 and was impressed by her scoring ability and defensive tenacity.
"She is a defensive juggernaut," Legette-Jack praises. "Her relentless defense is a force to be reckoned with."
And this is the part most people miss: Laila's story is not just about her athletic prowess. It's a tale of faith, reflection, and the power of a supportive community.
"I believe my ordeal happened for a reason," Laila shares. "It was a big change, but I had to trust in God's plan and see it from a different perspective."
